Cuttlefish and Cuttlebones

This site contains images of cuttlebones collected in the United Kingdom from the strand line of some Cornish beaches.

Three species are represented here:

‘Bones’ (shells) of a few other species have been occasionally recorded on the Dutch coast, so might be expected on our shore.

 

Cuttlebones are the internal shell of the cuttlefish. This ‘fish’ is a marine mollusc (cephalopod) having a distinct head with large eyes and a ring of tentacles around a beaked mouth. When threatened or pursued the cuttlefish ejects a black fluid.
