A circular walk from Pentewan to Mevagissey with the aim of recording on Penare Point (SX04H) a tetrad without any records! Hoping to re-find Carex punctata, Crambe maritima, Atriplex glabriuscula and Brassica oleracea amongst others.

Looking at an area of cliff grassland, scrub and small unimproved fields. Part of the area is a private nature reserve. A colony of Shore Dock Rumex rupestris nearby will also be seen.

Saturday 26th August 2006 - TREGIRLS, north of Padstow (SW97)
This meeting will be aimed at surveying the numerous arable fields in this area, where through arable stewardship several margins for arable plants and birds have been left. There is also a chance to have a look around Harbour Cove for Broad-fruited and Hairy-fruited Cornsalad Valerianella rimosa and V. eriocarpa

The purpose of this meeting is to look for Early Meadow-grass (Poa infirma) along the coastal path from Kynance to Mullion, where few recent records exist. Anything else of interest will be searched for including Land Quillwort (Isoetes histrix) if showing. The walk will be approximately 6 miles so please make sure it is within your capabilities.

The purpose of this meeting is to look for a fine array of bryophytes including the very rare liverwort Heath Pouchwort (Gongylanthus ericetorum) near Black Head and the Streaky Feather-moss (Brachythecium glareosum).

A meeting organised to look for a few of the ferns that need re-finding for the Cornwall Rare Plant Register including Lanceolate Spleenwort (Asplenium lanceolatum ssp. obovatum), Giant Horsetail (Equisetum telmatiea) and Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) and a chance to examine the effects of the great Boscastle flood in the Minster Valley upstream from Boscastle and to see if the Tunbridge Filmy-fern (Hymenophyllum tunbrigense) has survived.

These cliffs are rich in bryophytes, and it is hoped that we shall find many uncommon bryophytes such as the Starry Hoar- moss (Hedwigia stellata), Sieve-tooth Moss (Coscinodon cribrosus) and Brunton’s Dog-tooth (Oreoweisia bruntonii).

The weather prevented us from exploring this bryologically rich area last year where the boulder covered slopes contain many uncommon species including the rare Pendulous Wing-moss (Antitrichia curtipendula) which we should see.

BETWEEN SEATON AND OF LOOE (SX26S & SX26X). An area worth exploring for Pyrus cordata, which if present should be in fruit. An old record exits for this species in this area, so suitable hedges will be searched. The day will also be spent recording for the tetrad, including in coastal habitats.

NORTH OF YEOLMBRIDGE and BEALES MEADOWS CWT RESERVE (SX38E). This tetrad is wholly within the VC4 (North Devon) part of Cornwall! Low number of recorded species means it warrants re-surveying. Close-by is a small Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserve, Beale’s Meadow, which will be surveyed.

CROWDY RESERVOIR & DAVIDSTOW WOODS (SX18L & SX18M) and ROUGH TOR (SX18K). The meeting will be aimed at those interested in flowering plants, ferns and bryophytes. The last meeting held for recording bryophytes at Roughtor was a complete wash-out so hopefully the sun will shine on the bryologists on this date! Flowering plants to be looked for include Hammarbya paludosa and other rare species. .

The aim of the meeting will be to record the species associated with the less acid conditions associated with Devonian Limestone rocks in this part of Cornwall. We will try to find Lotus glaber, in its only Cornish site, Puccinellia rupestris, and to check areas suitable for Trifolium squamosum, not seen since 1930.

Saturday 7th May 2005 - 10am The Lizard
WINDMILL FARM & RUAN POOL (SW6915), AND KYNANCE COVE (SW6813) AND LIZARD POINT AREA (SW7011). Saturday morning - meet at Windmill Farm 10am, (Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Cornwall Bird-Watching and Preservation Society joint nature reserve) SW693152 - take the A3083 south for Lizard Village and turn west in a lane that leads to Rose-in-the-Valley (camping is advertised). The aim of the morning is to explore a former farm now managed for wildlife. Several new ponds and scrapes and Ruan Pool will be explored to search for Pillwort, Pilularia globulifera. Saturday afternoon – meet at the National Trust car-park, Kynance Cove (SW688131), at around 2pm. A chance to explore the classic Lizard site for nationally rare plants including Isoetes histrix, Juncus capitatus and Ranunculus tripartitus. Saturday evening - meet at Lizard Green (SW703125) at 6pm for evening walk around the Lizard Point area to see more rare species. This will be optional after a quick cuppa/pint in a local pub or cafe.

The purpose of this meeting is to both record and to learn more about the bryophytes in this under-recorded part of Cornwall. Saturday 19th March 2005 - 10 for 10.30am start LICHEN RECORDING AT NORTH HILL AND BEARAH TOR
Meet at North Hill Village Hall car park (SX270767) at 10am for a 10.30am start - there is a spring market in the hall on the same day, and toilets will be available in the hall from 10am. The morning will be spent looking at the lichens found at North Hill church and churchyard. Lunch (1pm - 2pm) - bring a packed lunch or there may be a chance for a pub meal (book yourself prior to the meeting on 01566 786916). After lunch meet back at North Hill Village Hall car park (SX270767) to head for Bearah Tor Quarry (SX2674) area to look at lichens in more open situations on the moor with a variety of habitats. The day should finish around 4pm. The day is aimed at beginners but is open to all, including more experienced lichen recorders.

Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th February 2005 - Rare bryophytes in metalliferous mine sites in west Cornwall David Holyoak has kindly offered to lead a meeting to look for rare bryophytes in metalliferous mine site areas near Minions (SX262714) on the Saturday, and at Phillack Towans (SW569391) on the Sunday. Mark Pool, the bryophyte recorder for Devon has again very kindly offered to be with us for these meetings. They will be as follows: - Sunday morning at Cotehele, on the banks of the River Tamar (meet at 10am in car park, SX42386817) Here we shall be looking at mostly woodland bryophytes. Sunday afternoon at Kit Hill, near Callington (meet in car park, SX38127140, at about 2pm) This hill is rich in vascular plants, and we hope that this will also be true for bryophytes. Morning – Meet on the track to Camperdown Farm at (SX122792). Here we shall be visiting bogs where the main interest will be Sphagnum mosses. There should however be time to examine some streams on the moors with their specialised flora. Afternoon – We shall proceed to Polbrock Bridge (SX013695). Here we shall be looking at the flora growing on some rock faces by the road and on the tracks along the side of the River Camel. A bonus will be a short diversion from bryology to look at the newly found fern species Diaphanous Bladder-ern (Cystopteris diaphana). The meeting aims to finish at 4pm, but there may be time to go to the nearby Dunmere Wood to see the beautiful liverwort Trichocolea tomentella and mosses such as Brachythecium rivulare growing on the banks of a stream there.

Here we shall walk up the path by the stream looking at the moss flora of marshy ground before visiting plants growing on mine waste. Although the Botanical Cornwall Group held a meeting along the Bude Canal (SS20) last year several puzzling willows were encountered. WATERSIDE MEADOWS AND CULM GRASSLAND - TREDWEN BARTON, ST. CLETHER AND GREENA MOOR, WEEK ST. MARY.
A recording session in the morning of waterside meadows at Tredwen Barton SX1785, recently under management advised by Westcountry Rivers Trust, and a visit to Greena Moor (once known as Creddacott) SX2395 to see Culm grassland. This is the largest continuous area of Culm grassland left in Cornwall and is a Plantlife/Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserve. Species that will be seen include Meadow Thistle (Cirsium dissectum), Petty Whin (Genista anglica), Fen Bedstraw (Galium uliginosum) and many other typical Culm grassland species. Plantlife also have a walk at Greena Moor for their members on the same day so it is hoped that the two groups will meet up.

BSBI LOCAL CHANGE SURVEY - ST. MARY'S, ISLES OF SCILLY
Help Rosemary Parslow (BSBI recorder for Isles of Scilly) in the local change survey for the Isles of Scilly (SV91A). If you would like to attend please make your own arrangements for travel to St.Mary's and your own accommodation (Hugh Town probably most convenient place to stay). The Botanical Cornwall Group will organise an introductory evening meeting on Friday 6th, and the recording for the survey on Saturday 7th June. Sunday 8th June will be a day spent recording on another island depending on sea-state. It is suggested that you travel to St.Mary's on the Friday morning and return to Cornwall on the Monday, or join in if you want to arrive earlier or stay longer.

Useful info: A short break by helicopter (max 4 nights in week - not weekend) was £72 in 2002. A Short break by boat (£55) or plane (£70-86) is max 3 nights and not Sat for plane but might be ok for boat. These don't have any refunds so you need to insure against cancellation. Boat is much cheaper but the trip could be rough!

This meeting will bring together a wide range of botanists from France, Britain and Ireland to examine the problems of the conservation of the vegetation and vascular plant species found in the Atlantic regions of Europe which are common to the three countries. Several interesting talks have been arranged and poster displays organised.

STONEWORTS AND EARLY DUNE FLORA A visit to the extensive Penhale dune system area (SW75) to collect stonewort material for identification by the national expert. It will also be a chance to see the early flowering plants of the dunes and several species of very restricted occurrence in Cornwall such as Lesser Pond Sedge (Carex acutiformis), Spurge-laurel (Daphne laureola) and Dune-fescue (Vulpia fasciculata).

SEARCHING FOR SAND CROCUS A visit to the re-discovered site of Sand Crocus (Romulea columnae) at Polruan to hopefully see it flowering. It will also be a chance to assess the population and discuss management and survey the associated plants present (hopefully also bryophytes and lichens). Other parts of the coastal area between Polruan and Polperro will also be visited during the day to see if any other populations of Sand Crocus are present.

BSBI LOCAL CHANGE SURVEY STRATEGY MEETING The meeting will discuss the national BSBI Local Change Survey for 2003 and 2004, what needs to be done in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly and in which tetrads the survey will be taking place. The afternoon will be spent recording in one of the tetrads to be surveyed (SW84J St. Clement Woods area).

The meeting will be an informal get together to review field meetings and workshops held in 2002 with an opportunity to see slides/digital pics from the meetings, to organise the programme for 2003 and to organise recording for the forthcoming BSBI monitoring scheme and the BSBI AGM in May to be held in Cornwall.
